The following is a message from the Alberta Disabilities Forum:

The next provincial election will take place in spring 2012. Hundreds of candidates will be knocking on doors and attending meetings asking people to vote for them. Now is a perfect time to raise our voices and talk about the changes we would like to see in Alberta. To help us accomplish this, ADF is running a non-partisan election campaign with two goals in mind – to educate the candidates about disability issues and to encourage people with disabilities to become involved in the election process.
We have provided several fact sheets that came from our member organizations and other interested individuals. They describe what Alberta Disabilities Forum would like to see happen for people with disabilities in the areas of income support, transportation, access to medications, education, employment, home care, AADL, housing, and recreation/active living. We have also included the election info sheet/party contact list and the guide, “How to Visit a Candidate.”
There are several ways you can talk with candidates:
-
Call the candidate’s campaign office and set up a meeting or ask the candidate to call you.
-
Attend a meeting where a candidate is speaking and ask questions.
-
Attend a public political forum where all candidates are speaking. These will be advertised in local newspapers, on TV, or the radio.
-
If you can’t speak to your candidate directly, send a letter by mail, e-mail or fax stating your concerns. Let the candidate know why the changes are important. Ask for support.
We encourage you share these fact sheets with your friends and use them to help promote the adoption of solutions to improve the lives of people with disabilities.
The Alberta Disabilities Forum represents 42 disability organizations and thousands of people in Alberta. Together, we can be a strong, powerful voice for change, but we must speak up! Come Election Day, we must vote. These are two concrete ways we can make sure Albertans with disabilities are not forgotten during the provincial election.
Be Sure to Vote on Election Day. It’s Our Right!
